...What Is THE HORROR-MOOD...?

Come into this SLITHER-SLIME mood, this archaic, living HORROR-MOOD where things live and die that have no names -- no faces… only TALES to tell… …of abominations undefined… of agonies unheeded… …of moments abstract, unreal, unimportant… where unnameable beasts and fiends rule, and writhing, horrid, tiny dead things serve… when horrors uncounted collect and compound a compost in minds of rhyme and reason… while senile elder things drivel and choke up ways and styles long forgotten… ignored… who tell of other-places much like this… less-heeded -- less horrid, perhaps less ugly… why THEY come into this slither-slime place no one cares, least of all US, for we come only to enjoy and integrate our muddy, mad minds into an astonishing, delightful experience THE HORROR-MOOD!

...A Twist Of Horror-Mood From Headpress...

…headpress kills me… …Headpress is a publisher of delightfully strange tomes about various weird aspects of pop culture… David Kerekes is the publisher whose introduction to Skywald came in the form of Psycho #15, the Special All-Ghoul Horror Issue… …The impact that Skywald had on him would carry over from his youth into his adult life… …The following 4 titles I have listed below are key publications to seek out, read, and own for anyone interested in “The Skywald Horror-Mood” and the history of the small 1970’s New York horror comic magazine publisher… …All were published by Headpress under the Headpress/Critical Vision imprints with the exception of “The Complete Saga Of The Victims” which was published by Chimera Arts and catalogued and sold/distributed by Headpress… …Rather than list each publication in order of its importance (I’ll let you decide that)… ...I’ll be listing them instead in the order of their publication… …I’ll also be spotlighting each book individually in greater detail in future posts... ...There are still some quantities of “The Complete Illustrated History Of The Skywald-Horror Mood” and “The Complete Saga Of The Victims” available from the publisher directly here...

…”Ghastly Terror” and “Headpress 16” are both out of print but do turn up occasionally on “eBay” and “Amazon” and other online booksellers as well, however, be prepared in some instances to pay more than their original cover price… …Trust me, the quest for all 4 publications is well worth it…

...Prologue To Horror...

…HORROR is a WEIRD word that CONFUSES as it TEASES…for it means MANY things…and many things mean horror… It is a word slightly BEYOND DEFINITION, for HORROR is PEOPLE and EMOTION and EXPRESSION, PROLOGUE TO HORROR ...HORROR is PEOPLE…VAMPIRES…WEREWOLVES…CORPSES…OBSCURE MONSTERS… …but in EFFECT…it is YOU…afraid of what such BEASTS and FIENDS might DO to YOU… …HORROR is EMOTION, therefore…the unnnameable, indescribable FEAR that OVERCOMES you when you are presented with something you can neither UNDERSTAND nor ACCEPT in your MIND…which is why HORROR is incurably linked to MADNESS and LUNACY... …HORROR is an EXPRESSION of inner knowledge BURIED at the BACK of your BRAIN…for you KNOW…that FIENDS, MONSTERS, and your FEAR of the UNKNOWN are SECONDARY HORRORS… …the REAL HORROR is you…and the UNBRIDLED, BRUTAL ALTER-EGO MADMAN INSIDE YOU who is capable of HORRORS far more EVIL than the WORLD now KNOWS… …what is HORROR?… YOU ARE!

...A Skywald Horror-Mood Classic... ...The Funeral Barge...

...Slide into the lunatic-emotional mad-macabre HORROR-MOOD... ...with this corpse-ridden emotion evoking tale of astonishing abominations by "Archaic" Al Hewetson and Xirinius entitled... ...The Funeral Barge...

...Widely considered by most if not all Skywald collectors and historians as "Archaic" Al Hewetson's finest story, the "Archaic" one himself considered "I Slime" his personal favorite... With his morbid imagination and alliterative scripting style on full display, Hewetson consistently ignored the notion and standard convention of having the good guys win in the end... ...Morality to him was entirely too subjective and inhibiting when composing his fictional "Mood" classics... ...To many "The Funeral Barge" still stands as the most perfect example of "The Horror-Mood" and I couldn't agree more...

...Bringing The Human Gargoyles Back To Print...

...As promised due to the requests I've received as to how "The Human Gargoyles" will return as a print publication as follows is an explanation of how the "shudder" process works...

...First I sent series artist Maelo Cintron the original scanned off page from Nightmare #10 Page 58...

...Maelo proceeded to work his magic on the page and sent me the following back in the mail...

...I cropped the panels so they all were squared and proceeded to the next step...

...I then placed new borders around each panel...

...And then I finally dropped in new lettering along with some new copy from Maelo and the page was finished...

...Finally as an extra special treat... here is the preliminary artwork for the cover of the forthcoming new issue... with and without final copy... ...Enjoy....

...Ingrid Pitt... ...21 November 1937 – 23 November 2010... ...Rest In Peace...

Ingrid Pitt during my youth was one of the most beautiful and bountiful actresses that I was literally "choke" exposed to on the Silver Screen... Her appearances in Hammer and Amicus Films such as "The Vampire Lovers", "Countess Dracula", and "The House That Dripped Blood" were unforgettable... She was born one day before my father and passed from this mortal coil one day before my birth date... ...What are the chances... ...Weird... Hammer Films delved into soft porn during her reign as "Horror Queen"  and I'll turn it over to "The Queen Of Vampire Films" herself to describe her thoughts as far as the criticism she took at the time... "Horror scripts kept coming in but they were all more of the same. In VAMPIRE LOVERS and COUNTESS DRACULA, the nudity had been an authentic part of the story... Suddenly, nudity and sex were the stories... It wasn't prudery that made me turn them down... I was ready to bare a breast with the rest of them... But the stories - ugh... If the script requires nudity I am not against it... In THE VAMPIRE LOVERS it was essential that there was nudity to make a point... Many films have been made with nudity being the main attraction... For some people that is enough motivation to see a film but as an actress it is not enough reason for me to be in it... If it is just there for no reason at all, it is up to the director and the actors to do with it as they believe... For instance, I think having brought nudity to the screen quite openly and unashamedly has done away with a lot of hypocricy and feelings of guilt... It is wrong to be ashamed of the naked body... The guilt is in people's mind, not in the showing of the body... I am glad to say that we live in a society today where the naked body is not something we have to be ashamed of... My progress as an actress can not be hindered by the truth..." - Ingrid Pitt

...Ramsey Campbell On The Human Gargoyles...

Like the magazines themselves, Skywald's letter columns under "Archaic" Al Hewetson's editorship were unlinke anything else being published... In lieu of the more traditional letters page format, the "Archaic" one instead presented his readers with a two page panoramic spread of photos, sketches, artist profiles, and most importantly of all, actual letters from "choke" actual readers! As follows is a portion of one such letters page from the Psycho Mailbag in Psycho #23... Ramsey Campbell is one of our Britsh readers - recently he wrote a rather, long, honest, and interesting critique of our Horror-Mood titles - we thought you might be interested in this short quote from his fine review - "...THE HUMAN GARGOYLES (VS. THE USA) is a justification of SKYWALD'S try-anything ...approach... As polemic and social comment it works better than almost any other monster saga, by refusing to be taken as a literal monster story; it drops its living Gargoyles into contemporary America as symbols, and the alienating juxtaposition works, maybe because Cintron gives the Gargoyles a sad dignity and alieness without sentimentalism..." The issue was also notable for appearances from Gene Day, Pablo Marcos and (!) Edgar Allan Poe? Weird...

...Stephen King On The Horror-Mood...

Excerpted from the diary that "Archaic" Al Hewetson kept while he was "Editor In Chief" at Skywald is the following "macabre" missive... ...Enjoy...

November 30, 1973

A fellow by the name of Stephen King, evidently a would-be horror writer, did a piece in Writer's Digest about the horror market... He was very kind to Skywald, noting that we were "the most vital in the field - constantly moving ahead, breaking new ground, using consistently innovative stories - a strong bullpen staff..." What an astute guy! I should drop him a line and offer him work as a scriptwriter... He's probably a starving young writer if he's trying to break into the horror market!
